LightSpeed’s Approach to Design System Evolution
Agile Workflow and Continuous Improvement
At LightSpeed, we believe in continuous improvement through agile workflows. To ensure the LSX Design System stays relevant and up-to-date, we leverage GitHub to manage feedback and track progress.
Our process involves:
- Creating GitHub Issues:
Each improvement or bug fix is documented as an issue on GitHub. This helps us keep track of what needs to be addressed and ensures nothing is overlooked. - Solving and Closing Issues:
Once an issue is resolved, we close it on GitHub, indicating that the improvement has been implemented. - Updating the Figma Changelog:
After closing an issue, we update the Figma changelog to reflect the changes made. This keeps users informed about the latest updates and improvements. - Publishing the Updated Design System:
Finally, we push the updated version of the LSX Design System to Figma.com. This means that users always have access to the latest features and enhancements.
This workflow not only keeps our design system current but also fosters collaboration and transparency within our team and with our community.

WooCommerce Integration and Community Recognition
One of the pivotal moments for the LSX Design System came after Ash Shaw from LightSpeed met with the WooCommerce team at WordCamp Europe 2024. During this meeting, Ash showcased the WooCommerce demo pages built using the LSX Design System. Beau Lebens, CEO of WooCommerce, was so impressed by the implementation that he introduced Ash to Stephanie Pi, Woo Developer Advocate.

Stephanie Pi took a particular interest in our block theme demo site and later featured LightSpeed’s demo site in the first edition of the WooCommerce Developer Newsletter in August 2024. This recognition helped put the LSX Design System on the radar of the WooCommerce developer community.
A Design System for the Community
Ash further promoted the LSX Design System to Pi. He emphasised its flexibility as a generic block theme design system that could be used with any WordPress block theme, not just LightSpeed’s own LSX theme. Following this, the LSX Design System was featured in the second edition of the WooCommerce Developer Newsletter, reaching a wider audience.
We noticed a significant increase in adoption and downloads after these promotions. Especially once the community understood that the LSX Design System was not theme-specific and could be adapted for any block theme. This distinction was key to broadening its appeal and driving further interest.
The LSX Design System was highlighted in the WooCommerce Developer Newsletter as a non-specific block theme design system with deep support for all core WordPress and WooCommerce blocks, patterns, and templates.
