What’s Next for the LSX Design System?

Explore the future of the LSX Design System as we refine the Style Guide, align with WordPress 6.7.1, revamp header and footer designs, enhance responsive layouts, and improve navigation for a more streamlined, user-friendly experience.

The Future of the LSX Design System

The LSX Design System has come a long way, evolving from a tool built to streamline our own workflows into a valuable open-source resource for the wider WordPress community. As we continue to learn from users and stay aligned with the latest advancements in WordPress, we’re excited to share some of the improvements and updates planned for the future of the LSX Design System.

These updates aim to enhance usability, ensure compatibility with the latest WordPress standards, and provide even more flexibility for designers and developers building with block themes. Read on to hear more about the future of the LSX Design System.

Refining the Style Guide

One of the key areas we’re focusing on is the Style Guide. We’re working to reduce the number of colors and refine the palette to ensure a more practical, streamlined experience for users. This will make it easier to maintain consistency across projects and ensure that users aren’t overwhelmed with too many options.

By simplifying the color palette and refining its usage across components, template parts, and patterns, we aim to improve both the visual impact and usability of the design system.

Aligning with the Latest WordPress Updates

Keeping the LSX Design System up to date with the latest WordPress core releases is a top priority. With the upcoming WordPress 6.7.1 release and the new TwentyTwentyFive theme, we’ll be making further updates to ensure that our design system reflects the latest WordPress standards.

This includes:

  • Updating core block designs to align with the TwentyTwentyFive theme
  • Incorporating new WordPress functionality and features
  • Ensuring compatibility with evolving block editor tools and settings

These updates will ensure that the LSX Design System remains future-proof and continues to support modern WordPress site-building practices.

We’re planning a revamp of the header and footer designs to offer more flexibility and better alignment with current design trends. The updates will include:

  • New header layout options
  • Improved footer structures
  • Enhanced responsiveness across all devices

These changes will make it easier for users to create polished, professional-looking sites without needing to heavily customize their headers and footers.

Responsive Tablet and Mobile Designs

A significant upgrade in our roadmap is the addition of tablet and mobile-specific designs for all template parts, templates, blocks, and patterns. While the current design system works well on desktop, we want to ensure that users have pre-built solutions for smaller screens.

This update will include:

  • Optimized layouts for tablet and mobile devices
  • Responsive patterns that adapt seamlessly across screen sizes
  • Mobile-friendly navigation and header options

By providing these mobile-first designs, we’re ensuring that users can build fully responsive websites more efficiently.

Enhanced Navigation and Hover States

Navigation is a critical part of any website’s user experience. We’re updating the navigation designs to make them more intuitive and visually appealing. This includes adding new hover states for menus and interactive elements, making the overall navigation experience smoother and more engaging.

Neatening Up Pages for Better Usability

We’re committed to making the LSX Design System as user-friendly as possible. As part of this effort, we’re working on neatening up the pages within the design system to ensure that users can easily find what they need.

This includes:

  • Improved organization of components, patterns, and templates
  • Clearer naming conventions
  • Better grouping of related assets

These adjustments will reduce the learning curve for new users and make the design system more intuitive overall.

Expanding Icon Options

To give users more flexibility in their designs, we’re adding more commonly used WordPress icons to the LSX Design System. This will ensure that users have access to a broader range of icons that align with the WordPress ecosystem.

By incorporating these icons into patterns and components, users can create visually consistent and professional sites more easily.

Renaming Assets and Variables to Match New WP Standards

With WordPress continuously evolving, we want to ensure that our design system remains aligned with the latest standards. We’re planning a complete review and renaming of assets and variables to match the new WordPress naming conventions.

This update will:

  • Ensure consistency with core WordPress standards
  • Make it easier for developers to integrate the LSX Design System into their projects
  • Improve overall clarity and maintainability of the design system

Looking Ahead

The LSX Design System continues to grow and evolve with the WordPress community. By implementing these upcoming improvements, we’re committed to providing a design system that is not only versatile and powerful but also easy to use and maintain.

We believe that these updates will further solidify the LSX Design System as a valuable tool for WordPress designers and developers looking to build modern, block-based websites with ease.
